Kevin Hennessy

Kevin Hennessy (born 1961) is a former Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with Cork in the 1980s.

Kevin Hennessy was born near Midleton in County Cork in 1961. Throughout his hurling career he was noted as being a stylish scorer and, as such, was often described as the most important player on the team. Hennessy first came to prominence as a minor in 1979 when he scored 1-3 against Limerick in the Munster final. He quickly made it onto the Cork under-21 team and by 1982 he was the proud holder of another All-lreland medal when he scored the winning point to defeat Galway in the final. Hennessy made his senior debut that same year, scoring 2-1 against Tipperary in the first round of the Munster Championship. He later went on to claim Munster medals in 1982 and 1983, however, Cork lost in both All-Ireland finals to Kilkenny.

Hennessy claimed a third Munster medal in 1984 and later went on to win his first senior All-Ireland title. As the years passed he went on to win every honour in the game including two Railway Cup medals, an Oireachtas souvenir and an All Star Award in 1986, when he won his second All-Ireland medal. His career suffered a set-back in the summer of 1987 when, as team captain, Cork lost their Munster crown to Tipperary. Hennessy claimed his sixth Munster medal in 1990, along with a third All-Ireland medal. He also holds three County Championship medals with Midleton and a football award with Imokilly.
