Kenwyne Jones (born October 5, 1984) is a Trinidadian football player, who is currently on the books of Southampton. He is a utility player, but has recently been playing as a striker.
Jones began his professional career with Joe Public FC in his native Trinidad, and moved to W Connection in 2002 before being purchased by Southampton in July 2004. He debuted with the Trinidad and Tobago national team January 29, 2003 in a game against Finland.
Jones went out on loan to Football League One club Sheffield Wednesday during December 2004 and although it finished on January 15, 2005, he quickly become a fan favourite with 7 goals in 7 games for the Owls. Following the successful loan spell, Wednesday manager Paul Sturrock failed in his attempts to sign Jones permanently, offering only half of Southampton's original fund to bring him to the South Coast.
Following Southampton's relegation from the Premiership in May 2005 a number of competing forwards were sold and Jones started season 2005-06 as a key member of the squad with the responsibility for scoring the goals to make the Saints contenders for a return to the top flight. During a transitional period for Southampton, managerial change and boardroom unrest took its effect on the players. Having used 41 different players in the 2005-06 season (most were sold to cut costs) it was only towards the end that new manager George Burley began to develop a squad from those that remained.
In the 2006-07 season, Jones has become an established member of the strike-force and has appeared in most games, and is forming a good relationship with his strike partners, Grzegorz Rasiak and Bradley Wright-Phillips. Unfortunately, this is not producing sufficient goals, and manager George Burley has admitted that he needs to sign a new striker if Southampton are to achieve promotion. [1]
On 26 December 2006, he received the first red card of his career for a push on Mark Hudson in the match against Crystal Palace[2], resulting in a 3-match suspension.
