Kentucky Route 242 is a west to east route that runs through rural Warren County, south of the city limits of Bowling Green.

The route begins at the cojoined US 68/ KY 80, known locally as Russellville Rd. It runs through the Rockfield community, then through rural country for 2.4 miles before intersecting with US 31-W.

After crossing 31-W, the route continues another 1.7 miles through the Richpond community before intersecting with KY 884, locally known as Three Springs Rd.

Past this point, the route narrows considerably for the remainder of it's length. Three miles after the junction with KY 884, the route overpasses I-65. KY 242 then continues for another 2.1 miles before ending at it's eastern terminus at KY 622 just south of the Plano community.
