Kensington, Gauteng
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kensington is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa, located in Region 3. The suburb was established by Max Langermann (after whom the thoroughfare Langermann Drive is named) in 1897 and was leased from the Bezuidenhout family of Doornfontein, whose family cemetery still stands in Bezuidenhout Park.
Kensington is laid out over the slopes of several koppies (flat-topped, high-sided hills) that run along the south side of Bezuidenhout ("Bez") Valley. The streets were laid out in 1903, and were heavily planted with trees, which give the area a distinctive, wooded appearance. Notable features of the suburb include Rhodes Park, named after Cecil Rhodes; the Jeppe Boys' and Girls' High Schools, and the immense Eastgate shopping centre. On Kensington's periphery lies Bruma Lake, a boating lake with a well-known flea market selling tourist souvenirs from across Africa.
Kensington is also home to the headquarters for the Church of Scientology of Johannesburg. [1]
