Kenneth Jennings (b.1925) is former conductor of the St. Olaf Choir, composer, and music educator. Husband of Carolyn Jennings, noted composer and former chair of the St. Olaf College music department.

[edit] Biography
Jennings was a graduate of St. Olaf College and a member of the St. Olaf Choir as a student. He received his master's degree from Oberlin College and his doctorate from the University of Illinois. Jennings was appointed to the faculty of St. Olaf College in 1953, and ascended to one of the world's most coveted choral podium's in 1968: Jennings was the third director of the internationally renowned St. Olaf Choir, succeeding founder F. Melius Christiansen and his son-successor, Olaf C. Christiansen. He retired from St. Olaf College in 1990, handing the baton to his former student, Anton Armstrong.
[edit] Work as a Conductor
As director of the St. Olaf Choir, Jennings became particularly noted for guiding and maturing the St. Olaf Choir as an ensemble from one rooted substantially in its 1911 founding and reactive offshoots to one ranking among the foremost vocal ensembles of the world. While Jennings never forsook the Choir's Lutheran heritage, he nonetheless broadened and expanded the ensemble's repertoire to include works of noted composers of the "modern" (post-World War II) era. He also augmented F. Melius and Olaf Christiansen's almost exclusive preference for unaccompanied (a cappella) programming to include works accompanied by chamber orchestra, piano, organ, and various solo instruments. Jennings prepared the Choir to record Ravel's [Daphnis and Chloe] with the Minnesota Orchestra under the direction of Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, and during his tenure, he arranged for several notable conductors to rehearse and lead the Choir in concert, including Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki, Bach specialist Helmuth Rilling, British organist Simon Preston, and Robert Shaw. Jennings led the choir on 12 international tours, most notably to France (where he led the St. Olaf Choir, Strasbourg Philharmonic and International Soloists in Bach's B Minor Mass for the Opening Concert of the 1972 Strasbourg International Music Festival), Norway (for the Bergen International Festival), and to Seoul, Korea (1988 Summer Olympics Arts Festival.
During the 1994-1995 Academic year Jennings served as director of the Gustavus Choir and Visiting Professor of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College. Jennings served as the guest conductor at both F. Melius Christiansen anniversary concerts (the 125th in 1996 and the 135th in 2006).

Jennings is known for writing well crafted choral works for advanced choirs. His writing is marked by the elegant and efficient part-writing, voluptuous harmonies and great attention to the meaning of the text.

- American Indian Songs (Walton Music Pub.) - Originally conceived as a pedagogical tool for training young conductors, this work is also suitable for performance. In seven short movements, but intended to be performed as a single unit (entire work lasts only about 5 minutes). Texts, translated into English, are from several different Native American tribes.

Day falls into night, the rose fades with time, Spring comes to an end, and music, George Herbert's particular love and delight, also has its cadences ("closes") or endings.
