[edit] Recording history
In 2001, Starr joined the Low Budget Crew, which also included D.C. locals Oddisee, Kev Brown, Critically Acclaimed and Cy Young [1]. His connection with producer Oddisee landed him a deal with New York-based indie label Halftooth Records, which released his debut single, "If", featuring Talib Kweli and Asheru, in early 2004. "If", and the B-Side single "Walk the Walk", were both included on the Halftooth Records compilation You Don't Know the Half. The single led to a number of hailed guest appearances, on tracks including Foreign Exchange's "The Answer", Wordsworth's "Head High", Kev Brown's "Say Sumthin", and Symbolyc One and Illmind's "Guilty Pleasures".
In June 2006, Starr released a full-length mixtape titled The Starr Report, featuring tracks from Supastition, Cesar Commanche, Foreign Exchange and Kev Brown. On July 18, Halftooth released the lead single from Starr's debut album, "Against the Grain" b/w "Waitin' on You" and "Back at it Again". On August 29, Starr Status was released, featuring production from Illmind, Khrysis, Kev Brown, Oddisee, DJ Roddy Rod and M-Phazes. Album guests included Kev Brown, Isaac Jones partner Sean Born, Supastition, Median, Talib Kweli and Asheru.
Starr Status was hailed by underground fans, and garnered the rapper attention from popular Hip Hop magazines including Scratch, The Source, and JIVE, who called Starr "one of the best MCs in the game" [2]. Starr Status failed to reach any Billboard magazine chart, but sold moderately well online, reaching the top 10 on the Best Sellers list on UndergroundHipHop.com in both August and September 2006 [3][4].
