Ken Tillery
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ken Tillery was a white man who was murdered in Jasper, Texas on January 19, 2002. On the night of his murder, Tillery was in Jasper, outside of a suspected crackhouse, when three black men, Darrell Gilbert, Blake Little, and Anthony Holmes offered him a ride.[1] Tillery accepted but later in the ride developed an argument over the gas money he agreed to pay. Tillery expected only to pay $5, but the men demanded $50.[2] When the truck passed Tillery's home and arrived at a gas station, Tillery jumped out and tried to flee, but was caught and beat up. The men ran Tillery over, dragging him 20ft-30ft under the truck before the body separated from the vehicle.[3]
The FBI investigated and ruled out a federal hate crime.[4] Jasper County Sheriff Billy Rowles concluded, "it was just about drugs and money."[5]
Frontpagemag.com and Larry Elder say that the Tillery case did not receive enough national attention in the USA even though it paralleled the James Byrd, Jr. murder four years earlier. The complaints were based on the fact that Tillery was Caucasian and his assailants, Darrell Gilbert, Blake Little, and Anthony Holmes, are African American, whereas the assailants of African American James Byrd, Jr. are Caucasian.
All three of Tillery's assailants were convicted and are serving life sentences. This also contrasts with the Byrd case, in which two of the three murderers were given the death penalty.
