Kemak
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kemak (Portuguese: Quémaque, also known as Ema) are an ethnic group numbering 50,000 in north-central Timor island. They primarily live in the district of Bobonaro, East Timor, though many live in the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia.
Their language is a Central Eastern Malayo-Polynesian language in the Timor languages branch. It is most closely related to Tocodede and Mambai. It has the status of one of the national languages in the constitution, besides the official languages of Portuguese and Tetum. The number of speakers has fallen in recent years.
