Kelvin High School is a public high school, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Founded in 1912 as Kelvin Technical High School, the name was later shortened to Kelvin High School. Originally housing only grade 10, 11 and 12 students, a grade 9 program was introduced at the beginning of the 1995-96 school year (as per Department of Education guidelines), special education students were integrated into Kelvin's student body at this time as well. In addition to a "regular" high school program, Kelvin High School offers a French Immersion Program (grades 9 through 12), as well as the IB Program (grades 10 through 12). The original school building was replaced by the present one in 1964.

Kelvin offers a wide variet of courses which inlclude: Mathematics, English, Health, Social Studies, Geography, History, Science, Art, Band (Music), Choir, Drama, Digital Animation Studio, Graphics, Asia Pacific Studies, Foods and Nutrition, Clothing and Design, Woodworking, Computer Tech, and many, many more.

Kelvins Althetic programs is easily on of the best in Winnipeg, with a very strong basketball and hockey team. Physical phytness is of the utmost importance to all teahcers, and Kelvin tries to encourage all students to be fit and active.

Kelvin is widely regarded as a very environmentally aware school, and this is because of its Globally recognized environmentalist student/teacher organization, called "HASTA" (Hopeful, Aware, Students, Taking Action). This certified group has been in progress for many years, made of kids and teachers alike who are genuinly concerned with the world around us, in terms of environment, politics, resources, world issues, and humans rights. The group works along side Amnesty International to help make our world a little better, step by step. They work by holding after school meetings and organzing events, fundraisers, and writing workshops. They have been recognized by the federal goveremnt along with other international associates.

Kelvin is also interested in many other organizations, including "Reach for the Top", a game-show style competition in which students answer questions regarding academics, politics, and even pop culture. Occasionally the game is shown on national TV, where only the best high schools compete for glory. Go, brainiacs, go!

Our high school offers a group called "ISCF" (Inter-Scholastic Christian Fellowship), which is a meeting place for students interested in learning about the Christian faith. You do not have to be a believer to come. The meeting is about 30-45 minutes long every lunch hour, and is open for prayer, discussion, games, worship, and bible reading.

Kelvin is the last public high school in Manitoba to offer Asia Pacific Studies. This course is for any students interested in a 0.5 credit for the study of the Aisa Pacific Rim nations, especially China, Japan, India, Korea, and Sri Lanka.

Kelvin is very famous for its very wide selection of language studies. Kelvin offers the following language courses (other than English): French Immersion, French, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, German, and Italian.

This high school offers many student educational trips, including trips to New York, Washington, Ottawa, Quebec, Alberta, B.C., London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, China, Japan, Korea and South America!

Famous Canadian musician, Neil Young, attended Kelvin High School, but never graduated. He is now a successful Canadian musician.

Also Marshall McLuhan an educator, philosopher and scholar attended Kelvin High School, as did Douglas Rain - the voice of HAL from the movie 2001.

[edit] Contribution to World War 2 Allied forces

A number of Kelvin High School students enlisted to fight in World War 2, more than fifty of whom were killed in action, inspiring the 2005 documentary, "The Boys of Kelvin High: Canadians in Bomber Command". The documentary was produced by Cliff Chadderton, a distinguished Canadian Forces infantry commander. Chadderton himself is a Kelvin High School alumnus. It honours the Kelvin students from Winnipeg who, even at their incredibly young ages, served in WW2.
