Kelham Island Quarter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kelham Island is one of Sheffield's eleven designated Quarters. Primarily an industrial area, Kelham Island itself was formed by a goit to provide power for the mills, and the quarter was subsequently named for it. It is roughly diamond in shape, and is bordered by Shalesmoor and Gibraltar Street to the south-west, Corporation Street to the south-east, Mowbray Street, Harvest Lane and Neepsend Lane to the north-east and Ball Street and Cornish Street to the north-west. The Cornish Works sit just outside this quarter, to the north-west
The area has a museum, the Kelham Island Museum, and two pubs well-known for their real ales, the Fat Cat and the Kelham Island Tavern, the site of the Kelham Island Brewery. On 16 January 2007, a third establishment, The Milestone, opened its doors, and will serve as a bar and restaurant.
