Keaton (The Legend of Zelda series)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Keatons are fictional fox characters that appear in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. They are magical creatures that bear the appearance of a golden fox with three tails. They also sport black fur at the tips of their ears and tails. The most distinctive feature about these creatures is their closed or slanted eyes. Keatons recognize each other by the sheen of their tails, as explained by the Keaton in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.

They are wise creatures that appear only to those wearing the Keaton Mask. However, these creatures are not fooled by one wearing the Keaton mask. They will reward an honest person if they are able to pass its test of answering 5-7 questions. Though they may seem shrouded in mystery, they are only around to help. If you answer the Keaton’s questions, referred to by many as the "Keaton Quiz", they will give you a Piece of Heart.

[edit] Ocarina of Time

In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the Keaton made his first appearance. When you are Young Link, you can visit the Happy Mask Shop in Hyrule Castle Town and borrow the Keaton’s mask. To sell it, show it to the guard standing in front of the path to Death Mountain. The guard says that Keaton is a "popular character" and that all of his son's friends have a Keaton mask, and that his son wants one as well.

A lot of early media claimed this mask to be a reference to Pikachu, and it is very much possible that it was, and was then fleshed-out fully as the Keaton character in Majora's Mask.

[edit] Majora's Mask

In The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, the Keaton makes a tangible role for the first time (as in the animal actually appearing). The Keaton appears when you wear the Keaton’s Mask while near a circle of moving bushes. After the bushes are gone, the Keaton will spin out of the ground poised to ask you its questions. If you answer the Keaton's questions correctly, it will give you a “Piece of Heart.” (or twenty Rupees, if you've already won the Piece). The mask is also used by Kafei to hide himself from his fiance, Anju.

[edit] Trivia

  • The concept of a three-tailed fox stems from Japanese folklore. According to the mythology, foxes (“kitsune”) are magical beings with the ability to shapeshift. The older a fox gets, the more powerful it becomes, and the more tails it gains. Kitsune grow a new tail every hundred years until they’ve reached their maximum strength of nine tails. They are notoriously mischievous.
