Dr Kevin Byrne (born Dublin, 1977) is an Irish genetics researcher based at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. After completing a primary degree in Theoretical Physics he pursued masters studies with Dr. Nigel H. Buttimore in the area of elementary particle theory, focusing on theoretical work related to experiments planned for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in New York. He joined Professor Kenneth H. Wolfe's Molecular Evolution Laboratory in late 2001, completing his Ph.D. in 2006.

His recent research has focused on the gene order relationships within and between a number of yeast genomes, resulting in the development of the Yeast Gene Order Browser (YGOB), a tool for comparative genomic evolutionary studies in a lineage where some species have diverged after an ancient polyploidy event. Elements of this work were recently published in the journal Nature.

He has an active interest in Irish politics. In 2000 he founded the Dublin Forum, as an initiative of the Fianna Fáil political party, and was its Organiser until 2005. The Dublin Forum hosts monthly public debates in Ireland's capital city. These meetings provide an opportunity to listen and engage with high profile speakers on a range of topics. Past debates have featured a vast array of commentators, experts and politicians (from both North & South) and ministers from most government departments.

He is also active in civil society campaigns in favour of the development of the European Union. In 2002 he was Campaign Director of Ireland for Europe (a civil society campaign in favour of the Treaty of Nice) and was a member of the executive committee of the umbrella civil society Irish Alliance for Europe campaign, which brought together all strands of civil society campaigning in favour of the Nice Treaty. Is presently a Director of the European Movement Ireland.

He is a Director of the small Internet development company, Vertex Technologies.
