Katz Under the Sea

Katz Under the Sea is a Courage the Cowardly Dog episode, which marks the fourth appearance of arch-nemesis Katz.

[edit] Plot

In this episode, Muriel gets fed up with Eustace, and decides to go on vacation. Upon reaching this decision, Muriel hears an advertisement for a vacation aboard a submarine, and immediately decides to accept the offer. Muriel takes Courage with her, leaving Eustace alone at home.

To Courage's horror, he discovers that his old enemy, Katz, is the captain of the submarine. As per usual, Katz says that dogs are not allowed on board and kicks Courage off the submarine. Katz puts Muriel in charge of preparing tea. Courage sneaks back onto the submarine in a suitcase and discovers that through the use of an explosive tea, Katz plans to blow up all other submarines so that his submarine company will be able to monopolize business. When Muriel begins to suspect Katz's plan, he imprisons her. Courage escapes from the submarine and tries to alert the U.S. Army. After the Army proves to be unhelpful, Courage brings the Nowhere Newsman to the submarine and persuades him to interview the caged Muriel. After the interview is aired on television, the Army becomes enraged that the Tea N Tea (the explosive tea Katz is using) is no good as they authorized the tea. Katz, meanwhile, prepares to blow the submarine to pieces, and is confronted by Courage. Katz and Courage fight, and after wrestling over the controls, Katz triumphs and the submarine prepares to explode. Katz escapes from the submarine, but immediately afterwards he is devoured by a shark. Courage manages to evacuate everyone from the flooding submarine moments before it explodes. After returning home, Courage hears a similar advertisement playing on the radio. In order to avoid a repetition of the previous encounter, Courage blows up the radio with a cannon.

[edit] Trivia

In the previous two episodes in which Katz appears, Courage shows no sign of recognizing his old foe from previous encounters; in this episode, Courage seems horrified when he realizes that Katz is in command of the sub.

The criminal banana from '1000 Years of Courage' also makes a cameo appearance in this episode-- this time selling "Top Secrets" stolen from the government. This may be an anachronism, since the criminal banana's previous appearance was in the year 3001. While his role is similar to that of the previous episode, in 'Katz Under the Sea', he has a much smaller role as peddler of illegal substances.

In Katz's first two appearances ('A Night at the Katz Motel' and 'Klub Katz') in 'Courage the Cowardly Dog', he appears to want to cause disaster and mayhem purely for pleasure. In 'Katz Kandy', he ceases to be a destructive villain and assumes the role of Muriel's jealous rival in the Nowhere Candy Competition. In this episode, Katz seems to be an assassin for a Submarine Company, and executes his actions for the sake of profit.

Katz seemingly dies in this episode by being eaten by a shark after he escapes the flooding submarine, but appears intact in the later episode, 'Ball of Revenge'. This is the final Katz episode in which he is the primary villain.
