Katz

Katz is a fictional character in the American animated television series Courage the Cowardly Dog. He an evil red cat who is widely considered to be Courage's greatest foe, most likely because he appeared in the most episodes out of all the villains(one more than Le Quack)and was also the villain in the first full Courage the Cowardly Dog episode. Unlike most of Courage's foes, Katz is a "jack of all trades" type of villain and is Courage's most sadistic foe as his plans often include killing, torture, and just plain trying to hurt people. In all of his appearances, he puts up "No Dogs Allowed" signs or says it to prevent Courage from ruining his plans. He normally outmatches Courage in a contest, beating him with little effort, but this normally leads to his defeat seconds later by Eustace or more often Muriel. The main theme with Katz is that he is an entrepreneur who mixes his businesses with his love of hurting people. Katz is also accompanied by very creepy background music.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Katz first appeared in A Night at Katz Motel, where the Bagges spend a night at his motel after a holiday. When he saw Courage, he puts up a "No Dogs Allowed" sign, after which Eustace ties him to a pole, but Courage was able to escape upon seeing one of Katz's spiders coming to him. Katz then began torturing Eustace and Muriel with his "pets," a number of large, man-eating spiders. In the end, Muriel was able to foil his scheme by hitting him over the head with a tennis racket.

In his second appearance, Klub Katz, the Bagges are shipwrecked and end up on Katz's island, where he leads them to his spa. Courage discovers to his horror that Katz is transforming people into mechanical appliances so that they will fight in his arena. Katz transforms Eustace into a wrecking ball and Muriel into a washing machine and forces them to fight. Eustace and Muriel are destroying each other until Eustace notices that Katz has stolen his precious red chair. In a rage, Eustace turns on Katz, destroying the arena, while Courage(having been transformed into a helicopter) and Muriel escape the island.

Later, in Katz Kandy, Katz is sick of coming second to Muriel in the Nowhere Candy Competition and plots against her, creating a Jell-O monster so that he can kidnap her and force her to reveal her secret ingredient that makes her recipes so popular. The Jell-O monster takes Courage and Muriel to Katz's Candy Shop where Katz plots methods of torture to make Muriel tell him what her secret ingredient is. Eustace finds Katz's shop, defeats the Jell-O monster, then battles Katz over his taffy machine, where he knocks Katz in. Katz survives, but ends up coming second in the competition yet again.

Later, in Katz Under the Sea, Muriel, tired of working tirelessly for Eustace, hears an advertisement for a submarine trip on the radio. Katz turns out to be the captain of this ship, and is plotting to blow it up for the benefit of his submarine company. Courage uncovers Katz's evil plan and fights with him over the controls, but Katz ends up winning and escaping, only to be eaten by a shark moments later, where he apparentally perishes.

Later, in Ball of Revenge, Katz appears as one of the villains summoned by Eustace to get revenge on Courage, despite his apparent death. Here he, along with the other villains, plays against Courage in a deadly game of dodgeball. In the story's climax, he and the other villains fall into a bottomless pit thanks to Courage's tremendous scream. Katz is now deceased in the Courage the Cowardly Dog series.

[edit] Possible Origin

Katz is not amongst the villains with origin stories e.g. Snowman, Benton Tarentella or the Clutching Foot, but it has been subtly implied in the episode 'Profiles in Courage'. Although Katz did not appear in this episode, a silhouette which looks exactly like him appears in the Puppeteer's shop. The Puppeteer brings his silhouettes to life and makes them do evil things. It is possible that Katz was once a silhouette and stole the life of a real cat, which would explain why he was so evil and ruthless.

[edit] Relatives

Next to nothing is known about Katz, and his family have never been seen. However, in the episode 'The Mask', a female cat called Kitty has a very similar design to Katz. Some fans believe that she may be Katz's sister. This would contrast with Katz's possible origin story.

[edit] Contests

Katz always beats Courage in contest. In 'A Night at the Katz Motel', he manages to beat Courage in ping-pong when he gets exhausted and was hit by the ball. In 'Katz Kandy', Katz also beats Courage in a staring contest when he insists him to blink as he sees his cannot hold much longer to stare. The main reason of Courage blinking in the contest is because Eustace, who wants his dinner, calls him, but Katz ignores his warning. In 'Ball of Revenge', he again manages to beat Courage in life-or-death dodgeball when Courage was easily knocked out by him and the other villains.

[edit] Intelligence

Katz has many times shown vast amounts of intellect, which define him as an evil genius. In 'A Night at the Katz Motel' he has a laboratory of strange looking insects and has bred a ferocious new race of spiders. In 'Klub Katz' he has created something which transforms humans into machines. In 'Katz Kandy' he has his own candy factory, which was presumably built by him. His inventions in the candy factory includes a candy cane to drop a person to a vat of taffy machine and a marshmallow making machine wherein Katz puts Courage there upon losing to him.
