Katrineholm Municipality is a Municipality in Södermanland County, in central Sweden, where Katrineholm is seat with a population of 22,500.
The name Katrineholm comes from a ducal residence with this name, after Catherina Gyllenhorn who lived there.
The community started growing when it became a railway junction on the eastern main line railway (Västra Stambanan; connecting Stockholm and Gothenburg), which was established in 1883. A few years later, the northern main line (Norra Stambanan) also was located through Katrineholm, which further enhanced its geographical importance.
In 1917 it had a population of 6,000, and had also fulfilled the requirements for the charter that it was granted that year.
[edit] Today
Traditionally it has had a strong industrial section, with several global companies contributing to growth of the city (e.g. Ericsson, Scania, SKF), but in the 1990's many of these companies significantly reduced their presence in the town. Currently the town is increasingly acting as a suburb to Stockholm with an increasing share of the population commuting to Stockholm. It is estimated that at least a few thousands take the train to work in other big cities such as Södertälje, Linköping, Norrköping, Eskilstuna.
The biggest fame of the town in the 1970's and 80's was the town bandy team, which was one of the best in the Swedish national league, though those days are long gone by. However, the Federation of International Bandy has its office in Katrineholm.
The thirty-first Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson, while originally from the neighboring municipaly Vingåker, were once the mayor of Katrineholm.
