Kato To'ichi

Kato To'ichi (加藤東一, b. 6 January 1916 d. 3 December 1996) was a Japanese painter and board chairman of the nitten, a significant Japanese art conference. Kato was a native of Gifu prefecture.

- 1916 Kato is born in Gifu, 5th son of a lacquerware merchant. His elder brother is the nihonga artist Kato Eizo.
- 1947 Graduates from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in nihonga studies。 He submits the painting 白暮 to the 3rd nitten exhibition. It is selected.
- 1993 Completes the wall partition for the great alcove at Kinkaku-ji.
- 1995 Obtains recognition from Japan as an "outstanding contributor to culture".
- 1996 Dies of pneumonia at the age of 80.
