Katni (also known as Murwara or Mudwara) is a town in the banks of the Katni River in Madhya Pradesh state of central India. It is the administrative headquarters of Katni District. It is located in the Mahakoshal Region of Central India. The city is 90 km away from the Divisional Headquarters of the region, Jabalpur. It is one of largest Railway Junctions in India. The city is famous for its abundance in lime and bauxite. Katni also possesses the Largest Rail Yard and Biggest Diesel Loco Shed in India.

Its population is around 10 lacs.

In the field of education Katni is a frontrunner. There are more than 12 higher secondary schools in Katni city. Out of them more than 5 are affiliated to the CBSE board and provide education to upper higher secondary level like other main cities of Madhya Pradesh. There has been a sudden enhancement in higher education. A new professional college has been opened and provides master degrees in technical fields beyond the basic higher education of colleges.katni arts and commerce college is established in 2001 in with in a 5 years stand as a reputed college in katni district.

One of the prime junction of Indian railways, Katni is located in the heart of the rail network. Trains from five directions come to Katni, which is situated at the junction of trunk rail routes connecting North-South and East-West. It is also advantageously situated on the path of the central Indian coal fields and the power plants of North and Western India. Considering the premeditated location of Katni, the railway has developed it as one of the largest yard of India. A complete new township has been developed at new Katni Junction. There are more than 5000 railway employees at Katni catering for the public needs from the railway. Katni has the biggest Diesel loco shed of Indian railways having 200 locomotives. It also has an electric loco shed having 100 locomotives. Katni also has Indian railway's biggest wagon repairs shop. All these facilities have greatly contributed to the development of Katni town & Katni district. By the way increased infrastructure facilities, higher potential for business opportunities, and the larger employment potential of the railway. The general public has now access to almost all part of the country directly through mail express trains. Railways are now establishing a new zone at Jabalpur therefore residents of Katni should look forward to more facilities from railways in coming years.

Since the beginning of 20th Century Mudwara (Katni) has been given the status of a town. The development work of the town started with the British rule. In 1998 Katni was declared as a district and the district administration was set up by the government. It was a major task for the district administration to bring Katni to maturity.
