Kathleen Kelly Martin was born on July 14, 1947 in the Central Valley of California (USA). She obtained a degree in Anthropology and History by the University of California in Santa Barbara.

She lives with her husband, the writer and photographer Larry Jay Martin in Missoula, Montana. They have collaborated in a book under the pseudonym of Kathy Lawrence.
