Katherine Shindle (born January 31, 1977 in Evanston, Illinois) is an American actress, singer, dancer, and AIDS activist. She is now credited as Kate Shindle. She came to fame as Miss America 1998, where she represented the state of Illinois as Miss Illinois 1997. She was attending Northwestern University at the time, though she was raised in southern New Jersey and graduated from the Bishop Eustace Preparatory School.[1] She graduated from Northwestern University in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in theatre. She is currently a cast member of the upcoming Broadway musical, Legally Blonde, based on the Reese Witherspoon film.

[edit] Controversies and career highlights

  • Shindle's father served on the national pageant's board of directors when she won the pageant. He was on a leave of absence during the time of the pageant, but some still question the legitimacy of her win[1].
  • Shindle garnered praise from many quarters during her Miss America reign, as she -- like previous Miss America Leanza Cornett -- used her official lecture appearances to raise awareness of AIDS and to promote condom use and safer sex.
  • Took a job as a waitress in 1999 in New York City as a temporary job between acting gigs.
  • While at Northwestern University, appeared in the annual Dolphin show.
  • In 1999, Kate's first CD, Christmases to Come was released on SSP Records. The CD featured Chicago jazz ensemble, Skip Sams' Society Sound, and was used to promote AIDS awareness and raised money for the National AIDS Fund.
