Katherine is a given name for a female, derived from the Greek name Αικατερίνη (Aikaterinē), of debated origin and meaning:

  • Εκατερινη (Hekaterine), from ‘εκατερος (hekateros) each of the two
  • from the goddess Hecate
  • or even from the Greek word αικια (aikia) torture

However, the Romans simply associated the name with the greek καθαρος (katharos) pure and changed the spelling to Katherine/Katherina. Therefore this can be considered as the meaning of the name which is used today.

Katharine is an alternative form, more popular in the United States than in Britain and also more popular in the past. The form Catherine, corresponding with the French version, is also common. Katherine, Katharine, Kathryn or Catherine may refer to:

Czech version of the name is Kateřina.
