Kath Pettingill, 70, is the matriarch of the notorious Melbourne based criminal family, the Pettingill family. Members of the Victoria Police have accused Pettingill of spawning a "nest of vipers".
Pettingill has one glass eye after being shot through a closed door at the Collingwood Housing Commission flats by Kim Nelson and Keryn Thompson as she and Dennis attempted to repay a $300 debt on behalf of her daughter, Vicky. Having herself been a prostitute she then went on to run successful brothels in South Melbourne and later Richmond, Victoria. Pettingill now lives in Venus Bay, in Gippsland, Victoria.
Her ten children include some of Melbourne's most notorious criminals, such as
- Dennis Allen, an infamous Melbourne drug dealer, reported to have murdered many victims. Died of a heart attack.
- Peter Allen
- Lex Peirce
- Victor Peirce, acquitted of the 1988 Walsh Street police shootings, killed in 2002.
- Jamie Pettingill, died of a heroin overdose in 1985.
- Trevor Pettingill, acquitted of the 1988 Walsh Street police shootings.
A biography of her life, titled, The Matriarch: The Kathy Pettingill Story was released in 1996 written by Adrian Tame ISBN 0-7329-0854-X.
