The Albanian First Division of football (soccer) was born in 1930 in co-operation with the Hellenic Football Federation (in Greek, EPO). From the next year until now it has been organized by the Albanian Association which was founded in 1931 by EPO.

At its inception, six teams fought for the league title. Sixteen teams participated in the 1998-1999 season; in 1999-2000 that number was reduced to 14. For the 2006-2007 season, 12 teams will play in the Premier League.
