Karwasra

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karwasra is a gotra of Jats found in Rajasthan in India. They belong to the Dahiya Clan. This gotra gets name from their most prominent ruler Karhwasra Rao. A rock inscription inscribed by his grandson was found in village Mangalata in district of Maroth in Jodhpur princely state, in which they have been called as Dahiyas. It was inscribed in 1215 AD and has been referred to in the book 'Indians in the Cauvery' on pages 87 and 88.

Karwasra gotra came from 'Dahiya' gotra usually found in Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in India. They are solar race kshatriyas. They are descendants of Dadhichi Rishi. According to James Tod Karwasras ( as Dahiyas ) had a war with Alexander the Great. At that time they were settled on the banks of Sindhu and Sutlej rivers. This is a major branch of Puru. The Dahiya clan took part in the Mahabharata. At that time they were living in the Southern part of China. According to Todd's Rajasthan (based upon the writings of Justin and Herodotus), thousands of years before Christ, the Dahiya Mahajati tribe lived on the eastern bank of the River Sihun (Oxus). The Heir, Bhullar and Sihag sub-tribes lived in the adjoining country. The Dahiya Jats took part in the battle between Darius and Alexander.

An inscription dated 26 April 1215, in the temple of Kevay Goddess, at village Kinsaria near Jodhpur made by Jayant Singh son of Param Singh Dahiya and grandson of Mahamandaleshwar Rana Karhwa Rao Dahiya at village Salana near Bharaut in Jodhpur state. The descendants of Rana Karhwa Rao are known as Karwasra.

In Ferozput region of Punjab, there are many villages where you can find Karwasra as the dominant clan. One of the examples is Ramsara(a village 10 km from Abohar). Here you can find around 100 families of karwasras. In the neighbouring region of Ganganagar also, there are many villages dominated by karwasras.
