Karunya University (formerly Karunya Institute of Technology & Sciences) is a fully residential private University located in Coimbatore, India. It was founded as a christian minority institution by Dr. D. G. S. Dhinakaran and his son Dr. Paul Dhinakaran, the well-known evangelists and founders of Jesus Calls Ministries, India.

In the year 1981, Dr.D.G.S.Dhinakaran, received the divine commission to start a Technical University which could turn out outstanding engineers with leadership qualities at the national and global level. The institute was inaugurated on 4 October 1986 as Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences by Mr. Arjun Singh , the Human Resources and Development (HRD) minister in the current Indian government. The institute was then affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and functioned as a private self-financing engineering college. It was promoted by the Karunya Educational Trust. In 2004, the institute was awarded the deemed university status in recognition of its academic excellence by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India and subsequently renamed as "Karunya University" under sec. 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 vide Notification No. 9-3-2000-U3 dt. 23.6.2004 of the Government of India [1].

Karunya Institute of Technology was the first private engineering college to receive the "Autonomous" statusAll Technical programmes of the University conform to prescribed norms of the AICTE, B.Ed as per NCTE norms; Science programs as per UGC norms. Karunya Institute of Technology & Sciences was accredited by NAAC (UGC) with A Grade in 2003 (valid for five years).

Karunya University has one of the most beautiful campuses in India. Its verdant 650 acres is nestled in the bosom of mother nature with the mountains of the Western Ghats surrounding it on three sides. The only open horizon is towards Coimbatore, 26 kms away. The weather is cool and breezy with the clouds from Kerala drifting high over the mountains giving frequent drizzles. The Siruvani reservoir, which supplies water to Coimbatore City, is about 11 kms further up in the hills on the Kerala side. Just 2 kms away from the campus on three sides one will hit the Tamilnadu reserve forests. The famous Kovai Kurtallam falls is located 2 kms in side this forest and is accessible by motorable road. Elephants, panthers and wild boars at times wander in to these parts of the forest. The Noyyal river, which flows through Coimbatore and Tirupur on its way to the Bhavani, originates here and its branches surround the Karunya campus. The evening sky will often treat you to some dazzling display of colors. Sitting out there in the open on the campus looking at the mountains can be an elevating experience. A serene calmness prevails punctuated only by the cries of homing birds. The peace and tranquility of the campus is ideal for spiritual and intellectual pursuits.

Dr.D.G.S.Dhinakaran is the Chancellor and Dr.Paul Dhinakaran is the Pro-Chancellor of Karunya University. Dr.P.K.Philip is the Vice-Chancellor and Prof.Joseph Thomas is the Registrar.
