Karoi

Karoi is both a town and a district in Mashonaland West province, Zimbabwe. Karoi town is located approximately 200km North West of Harare along the main road from Harare to Kariba and Chirundu. Karoi town is situated in a farming area. The population of Karoi town in the 1992 census was 14,763. Karoi is also about 80km north-west of Chinhoyi town, the capital of Mashonaland West province. About 30km south-west of Karoi is the farming village of Tengwe. The name Karoi means "little witch".

In 1945 Karoi became the designated area for mainly white war veterans who obtained government assistance to embark on farming (mostly tobacco farming).

The high density suburb (formerly known as "township") for Karoi lies about 2km east of the town centre and is called Chikangwe.

The main secondary schools in Karoi are Karoi High School, and Chikangwe High School.

There are two hotels in the town Karoi Hotel in the town centre, and Twin River Inn about 1.5km north of the town on the road to Kariba.
