Karlebo

Karlebo is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Frederiksborg County on the east coast of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in eastern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 40 km², and has a total population of 19,163 (2005). Its mayor is Olav Aaen, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Kokkedal. Other towns in the municipality are Kirkelte, Karlebo, Gunderød, Avderød, Hesselrød, Vejenbrød, and Nivå.

Neighboring municipalities are Fredensborg-Humlebæk to the north, Hillerød and Allerød to the west, and Hørsholm to the south. To the east is the Øresund, the strait which separates Zealand from Sweden. It is ca. 9 km distance from Karlebo municipality to the Swedish island of Ven, and ca. 16.5 km distance to the nearest Swedish mainland point at Glumslövs Nature Reserve, a national park south of Ålabodarna in Skåne, Sweden.

By January 1, 2007 Karlebo municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Fredensborg-Humlebæk municipality to form the new Fredensborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 112 km² and a total population of 39,187 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Hovedstaden ("Capital Region").
