[edit] The Legend of Karl Cordell

Karl Cordell has gained quasi-legendary status at the University of Plymouth, and has unofficially been awarded the keys to the city alongside Sir Francis Drake, Dawn French and Sharron Davies. He can be identified walking on the grounds of Plymouth University's city centre campus, wearing a striking two-piece tailored turquoise suit enshrouded in a beige rainmac. Cordell teaches students at several stages of various qualifications, and has been recorded describing Stalin as 'the sort of bastard you shouldn't mess around with', and Antonio Gramsci as an overhyped intellectual who 'contributed less to the Italian communist movement than my [sic] grandad'.

Cordell is an avid Glasgow Celtic supporter, and on 22 November 2006, claimed that he masterminded Celtic's quasi-giantkilling of Manchester United the night before. In this, he claims he telepathically advised Celtic manager Gordon Strachan on how to win the game at half time, persuading Strachan to focus on exhaustative wing play and control of the wide channels, leading to Celtic's command of creative play and general domination of the second half. Cordell also believes he knew Shunsuke Nakamura was going to score the freekick the moment it was awarded, a goal celebrated as an amazing individual effort in excess of 40-yards.

Despite lecturing on the political and electoral systems of continental Western Europe, Cordell admits to being completely baffled on the politics and elections of Italy, and cordially encourages students to write to him if they can help explain it. Incidentally, he can be contacted by the staff mail facilities at the University of Plymouth.

[edit] Research Grants

In July 1997, Cordell was given a research grant of £38,000 from the Leverhelm Trust for the research project ‘The Politics of Ethnicity in Poland and The European Union’. In March 2003, Cordell was awarded the sum of £17,000 from the British Academy to conduct the research project 'The German Question Continued? Czech-German, Polish-German Relations Since 1990'.
