Karate High School is an American experimental rock band formed in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. They have a debut album called Arcade Rock and their sound has been described as an "aggressive blend of poppy punk, hyper post-hardcore, and eight-bit blips" [1]. On March 21, 2006 they released their debut album Arcade Rock. Karate High School states that they take inspiration from the music in video games. According to the band, "Arcade Rock" is more than the name of their album - it's also a term that describes their style.[2]

[edit] Style

The style of Karate High School uses the overlay of screaming and singing that is characteristic of post-hardcore. To distinguish themselves from the crowd KHS uses synthesizers liberally. This gives the songs more of a videogame soundtrack feel. This style is similar to HORSE the band and 8 Bit Weapon. This style is also referred to as Nintendocore at times.

[edit] Trivia

  • A commonly asked question is how the band received its name. According to an interview with Paul McGuire, "I'm a huge fan of terrible, campy science fiction and horror movies. From Ed Wood to the Troma films, it's an admitted guilty pleasure. With that said, I chose the name because I wanted something that would evoke that type of imagery. The second runner-up was Cannibalistic Underground Humanoid Dwellers, but I figured since that was already the name of a great movie, I'd get my pants sued off. Thus, Karate High School was born and the world has been a better place ever since."
