Karanja is a city and a municipal council in Washim district in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

Karanja is located at 20.4833° N 77.4833° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 422 metres (1387 feet).

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Karanja had a population of 60,158. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Karanja has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 67%.

Karanja is famous as a very holy place for Hindus and Jains. It is the birth place of Shri Nrusimha Saraswati Swami Maharaj, universally regarded as the 2nd incarnation of Lord Dattatreya. There is a famous temple in Karanja called as Gurumandir. The Gurumandir organisation also operates a vedic school.

The town is named after Saint Karanj. There is also a large lake known as "Rishi Talao". The town has been looted twice by famous Maratha King Shri Shivaji Maharaj. Chaware family there is working hard to spread literacy. The town has following schools/colleges...
