Karamchedu is a very prosperous model village located 8.5 km from the busy commercial town of Chirala in Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, India. Karamchedu village has its own significance right from the time of British Raj because of its zamindars and other influential personalities. Many newsmakers hail from this historically famous village.

Benefitting from the irrigation facilities provided by the century-old, British-built Krishna and the post-Independence Nagarjunasagar canals, the fertile irrigated land and combined with tobacco farming at Nizam area were the major sources of prosperity of the village, which in the course of time diversified its wealth into business, rice mills, contracts, transport operation, banking, shipping, higher education and film production. Thus Karamchedu counts among its natives some well-known film producers and businessmen. A significant proportion of villagers regularly migrated to other States and even to foreign countries mainly USA.

This village was in news after a massacre in July, 1985.

It is interesting to note that, despite the diversification into urban economic activities and migration to far-off places, the villagers of Karamchedu retained an active connection with the village by owning properties there and some migrant farmers’ families continued to live there. Currently this village has all modern eminities such as Educational Institutions, Rajiv Internet Village, Eye Hospital, Sports Complex, Marriage Halls, General Hospital, Veternary Hospital, Movie theaters, Recreational Clubs and all religious temples.

[edit] How to reach

By Road: There are regular buses run by both govt (click here for Time-Table) and private from all major towns in Andhra Pradesh to Chirala.

You can reach Karamchedu from chirala either by catching a APSRTC bus from the Bus Depot (for every 20-30 minutes from 5AM till 11PM). Alternately you can hire an Auto Rickshaw or a Taxi (usually available at anytime).
