[edit] Plot

Karakuri Kiden Hiwou Senki is the story of a young boy from a small town, set in the Meiji Restoration period of Japan, that has made its way simply, using "Clockwork Dolls" or "karakuri" for festivals. This simplicity is destroyed when the "Wind Gang" destroys the city and captures its citizens. Hiwou and his friends--Shishi, Machi, Tetsu, Mayu, Sai, and baby Jyobu--who are exploring a cave at the time, escape unharmed and embark on a quest to save the town. Along the way, they are forced to use the clockwork dolls as weapons--something they were never, ever supposed to do, according to Hiwou's father. Early in the series, they meet Arashi, a member of the Wind Gang, and Hana and Yuki, two samurai daughters who end up traveling with the group for a large part of the show.
