Kapteyn Astronomical Institute

Astronomical research is organised in the Kapteyn Institute. The research institute has been named after its founder, Jacobus Cornelius Kapteyn, who lived from 1851 to 1922. Kapteyn was appointed professor of astronomy and theoretical mechanics in 1878 at a time when no astronomical tradition, let alone an observatory, existed in Groningen.

The five astronomical institutes of the Netherlands, at the universities of Amsterdam, Groningen, Leiden, Utrecht, and Nijmegen, collaborate in the "Netherlands Research School for Astronomy (NOVA). The mission of NOVA is to carry out front-line research in the Netherlands, and to train young astronomers at the highest international level. All graduate astronomy education in the Netherlands is concentrated in NOVA.
