Kaori

Kaori is a Japanese given name for females. Native English speakers have a hard time pronouncing this name properly since it has a short "o" after a short "a". It is correctly pronounced like "kah-oh-ree".

The meaning varies depending on how it is written. Several (common) written forms includes:

  • (aroma)
  • (fragrance)
  • (incense) (woven item) – perfumed fabric or woven fragrance
  • (beautiful) (woven item) – excellent fabric
  • (nursing) (light) – the first kanji can also be read as 'entertaining'.

  • かおり – no specific meaning (can be any of the above)
  • かをり/かほり – same as above but written in a more classical form, pronounced the same way but sometimes romanized as Kawori and Kahori respectively
  • A somewhat similar name, in terms of both pronunciation and meaning, is Kaoru. Unlike Kaori, it can be used for both sexes.
