Kansas Highway Patrol

The Kansas Highway Patrol is a law-enforcement agency that serves the entire state of Kansas. While the Patrol's primary focus is maintaining the safety of State, Federal and Interstate highways, it also is charged with providing support for rural and small municipal police departments when tactical, aerial or other specialized services are needed.

The Patrol is made up of several geographical headquarters units, referred to as "Troops". This includes Troop A (Kansas City Metro), Troop B (Topeka), Troop C (Salina), Troop D (Hays), Troop E (Garden City), Troop F (Wichita), Troop G (Kansas Turnpike) and Troop H (Chanute). In addition the Patrol has a number of specialty Troops including Troop I (Motor Carrier Safety), Troop J (Training Academy- Salina), Troop K (Capitol Police- Topeka), Troop L (Governor's Security), Troop M (Communications), Troop MC (Motor Carrier Inspectors), Troop S (Special Operations) and Troop T (Aircraft).

[edit] Officers of the Patrol

Most law enforcement officers of the Patrol (approximately 400 total) are known as "State Troopers". They perform general patrol duties throughout the state and work closely with local law enforcement agencies. In addition the Patrol has two other classes of law enforcement officer- Motor Carrier Inspectors and Capitol Police Officers. Motor Carrier Inspectors are responsible for enforcing the rules and regulations that ensure the safe operation of large trucks hauling goods across the country. Capitol Police Officers patrol the area around the Kansas Capitol Complex in Topeka and provide security for major state office buildings.
