Kangwon National University was established in 1947 in Chuncheon, Kangwon province, South Korea. As one of the ten major national universities in South Korea, Kangwon National University serves as the flagship educational institution of Kangwon-do.

Initially established as an agricultural college, Kangwon National University has steadily added colleges to the University encompassing a full spectrum of academic fields. KNU expanded in 1997 adding a medical degree program and in 2000 a University Hospital. A law school was added to the University's graduate schools in 2002. In 2006, KNU merged with Samcheok Univeristy, adding the colleges of Veterinary medicine and Information Technology to KNU's existing colleges.

Current enrollment stands at nearly 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students. KNU's academic schedule is based on the semester system with the spring semester starting in March.

Known as the Swiss Alps of the Orient, Chuncheon affords its residents a wealth of recreational activities. Nearby Lake Chuncheon offers water skiing and boating facilities as well as several islands on the lake. Hiking in the nearby mountains and snow skiing are less than an hour's reach from the university.
