Kandu

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kandu is a Sparkmans & Stevens 40 ft. classic sailboat, named after a classic Hindu Goddess of compassion to travelers. Built in Detroit at Fisher Boat Works in 1946, she initially sailed and won many races across the Great Lakes until 1956; after which she has continued to actively campaign on San Francisco Bay and the Ocean Waters of California and Mexico. She is a Master Mariner vessel.

The boat was built as one of a number of "Mackinac" Class S&S Sloops. She was commissioned by Wilfred J. McGuire, owner of a prominent General Motors Dealership. It was his first sailboat. He sold his beloved Kandu 1956 as a result of buying larger vessel, the 52 foot Ketch "Merry Maiden" designed by Rhodes.
