Kalapas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kalapas, according to The Buddha, are the tiny particles which ultimately constitute mind and matter, arising and passing away trillions of times in the blink of an eye. Kalapas are formed of the eight basic properties of matter: solidity, cohesion, vibration and calorific content (also referred to as earth, water, air and fire) together with color, smell, taste, and nutriment. The first four are called primary qualities, and are predominant in kalapas. The other four are secondary properties that derive from the primaries. The description of the four elements of earth, water, air and fire by the Buddha predates the similar description in ancient Greece. The Buddha sent 60 arahants around 587 BCE to all known lands to spread his teachings.
