Kalan Porter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Richard Kalan Porter (born November 11, 1985) is a singer from Medicine Hat, Alberta [1], who was the second winner of the reality television series Canadian Idol. Beating out 8,977 other contestants, Porter was crowned "Idol" on September 16, 2004 in front of a live TV audience. He is the only Idol who was never in the bottom two or three. Idol judge Zack Werner nicknamed Porter "The Little Prince" due to his resemblance to the title character of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's children's book of the same name.
Kalan's first single "Awake in a Dream" was released on October 5, 2004. "Awake in a Dream" has become the best selling debut single for a Canadian artist to date and was certified 8x Platinum by the Canadian Recording Industry Association in November 2004.
Kalan's debut album 219 Days, released November 23, 2004, reached number four on the Canadian charts in its first week. The album title, 219 Days, refers to the number of days from his first audition to the release of his debut CD. It has been certified 2x Platinum.
Kalan's fanbase is generally known as the "Kalanadians" (a portmanteau of the words Kalan and Canadian).
Kalan completed a cross-Canada, 65-date tour in 2005. Most of these shows were sold out.
On February 15, 2006, Kalan Porter received three Juno Award Nominations in the following categories: Artist of the Year, Album of the Year for 219 Days, and Pop Album of the Year.
In 2006, Kalan presented at the 2006 Juno Awards in Halifax.
In July of 2006 Kalan announced to fans through his official website that BMG was giving him time off before recording his sophomore album. He returned home to his family's buffalo and cattle ranch to be with his mother, who is undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer, and his grandmother, who faces surgery.
He is currently recording his second record in Los Angeles, which is due for a summer release in 2007.[citation needed] The album will consist of 12 tracks (according to his website blog) and is rumoured to be released internationally.
