Kalai (Kaniela Ka lei Ali'i 'O'Kalani Kala'i) was born December 18, 1979 in Kailua, Hawaii. When he was two years old his family moved to Alaska where he learned to play the guitar by listening to his father. At eighteen, he left Alaska with the intent of obtaining a degree in entomology, but only finished one year of schooling before deciding to make his career in music

At the age of twenty-one and with the help of friend Sam Cardon, Kalai signed a recording contract with Treble V Music, and released his debut album “Acoustacism” in 2001. Kalai returned to Alaska where he built an in-house studio and produced his second album “Six Strings and the Rainy Day Man”, for which he performed all the instrumentation. Following its release he began touring more extensively, as well as working on his third album “Rebel Hands” which was released in 2004. After signing a new contract with BridgeTone Records, he released his latest album “Crows Feet” in 2006.
Kalai is currently touring and is scheduled to perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live in April. His work has appeared in several movies including: The Work and the Glory: American Zion, The Legend of Johnny Lingo, and Mysteries of Egypt (IMAX).
