KALB-TV Newschannel 5 is a full power television station -- as an affiliate of NBC and CBS, the station serves the entire Alexandria, Louisiana metropolitan area. Its transmitter is located near Forest Hill, Louisiana.

This station is licensed to broadcast on VHF channel 5 with an estimated Effective Radiated Power of 100 kilowatts and in high definition on UHF channel 35 with an ERP of 1,000 kilowatts. KALB is owned and operated by Media General of Richmond, Virginia.

KALB began its broadcasting operation on September 19, 1954; with NBC's broadcast of the 1954 World Series. The station has been an NBC affiliate from the very first day, though it also carried programs from CBS and ABC until 1957.

Also in 1957, the station was bought by Red River Valley Broadcasting, owned by Shreveport businessman T.B. Lanford. Park Communications bought KALB in 1993, and merged with Media General in 1997.

KALB launched its digital signal in 2002.

KALB has recently signed an affiliation deal with CBS, and has begun carrying CBS programming on digital channel 5.2 / 35.2. Before then, central Louisiana viewers watched CBS on KLFY-TV in Lafayette or KNOE-TV in Monroe.
