[edit] Background

Kain is the host of the King of Fighters: Maximum Mayhem tournament. An affluent heir of German heritage, Kain lived a pleasant life alongside Grant until he learned that his older sister, Marie Heinlein, was dating the most notorious crime lord of all time, Geese Howard. Because of this, Kain eventually forced Marie out of the Heinlein estate as punishment for her love for Geese.

Since then, Kain has been training through the dark arts of evil alongside his best friend Grant, whose real name is Abel Cameron. Throughout his training, Kain found out that Marie gave birth to a child named Rock Howard, that Marie died of a mysterious disease, and that Geese Howard took his own life by refusing Terry's aid. Kain wanted to make Geese pay for playing with his sister even before Geese's death, but because Geese took his own life, Kain decided thus that the only way he can do away with Geese is to perfect a society in which his atrocity would be horrendous enough for people to forget Geese.

During Kain's rise to power, several catalysmic events happened. The most noticeable events was the rise of Second Southtown for illegal trade.

Second Southtown was located near the original Southtown but even though Second South enjoyed a comeback, the tranquility of Second Southtown has been eclipsed when Kain placed an iron grip on the reborn Southtown, just like Geese did back in the 1970s - 1990s. The only way Kain will take revenge against Geese would be to handle his oppression in a way that would be influential enough for people to forget Geese. Therefore, Kain made a cartel influential enough to grant him control of almost all of Second Southtown through a secluded mansion that watched over Second Southtown. Control and money was not enough for Kain, though, as he needed a vehicle in order to prove his theories true.

The task fell to a plan to exterminate the living weak, and to force a secession of Second Southtown into a separate country in which only the strongest rule with their fists. Hoping to prove his theories were true and enough for everyone to forget Geese, Kain issued invitations for 12 fighters to participate on a tournament called Maximum Mayhem, a tournament that brought the fighting world together. The prize for the tourney being the ruler of Second Southtown, although Kain had plans to use this tourney to exterminate all weak beings currently living in Second Southtown, a plan that assure Kain's evil status. Kain was only interested in two contestants in particular, Terry Bogard (the man who was responsible for the death of Geese), and Rock (the son of Geese and Marie).

During the tournament, Terry fought Grant, much to Rock's opposition. Although Terry won, he was not able to continue any further, and at Grant's dying advice, Rock took over Terry's place and embarked on a route to Kain's Mansion. Rock then approached Kain with a rude tone as Kain pronounced that Marie happened to be Kain's big sister, making him Rock's uncle. Kain kindly asked Rock to join him in making Second Southtown independent but Rock refused to cooperate and chose to fight Kain instead.

Rock and Kain fought shortly after the conversation and Kain gained an unfair advantage with his majestic purple flames. Rock's hidden power erupted near the end of the match as Rock made nasty work out of Kain with a deadlier version of Geese's Deadly Rave. The mansion crumbled throughout the process. Kain admitted defeat as Rock was the last one standing. Rock then demanded real answers from Kain and he resisted until Kain told Rock that his mother was alive. Kain managed to brainwash Rock really well as Terry approached the destroyed mansion finding out that Rock is now Kain's partner. Terry trusted Rock's decision to stay with Kain and then left the scene. Rock, feeling guilty for having left Terry, is now pressed by Kain to find the first direction to go as Kain's new partner.

[edit] Gameplay

He is Rock's uncle and seeing as how family goes, he's powerful and very strong. Kain is a charge-based character (much like certain Street Fighter characters such as Guile, M. Bison, and Vega) but, that doesn't manage to make him any less cheap. If you succeed in beating him one round, the next round his T.O.P. meter will cover his entire life bar making him do double damage all over the place.

[edit] Trivia

  • Kain's middle name, although noted with the initial "R.", is never revealed during the game.
  • Kain believes that the weak have no place on Earth and believing that only the strong should be allowed to live. He despises emotions since they are a sign of weakness.

  • His voice actor, Jun Hashimoto, also did Kim Dong Hwan and Cheng Sinzan in the Fatal Fury franchise.
  • His nephew, Rock Howard, makes a cameo of him in one of Rock's alternate costumes in King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2.
