Kaimuki, Hawaii

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kaimuki, Hawaii is an old town once used as King Kalakaua's ostrich farm, where they roamed wild over the current mountain side. It later became the site of the state's carnation farm for funeral flowers. Now a mix of residential area with a small business district (mainly restaurants and service industries), it continues the urbanized Honolulu region to Kahala, Hawaii.

Kaimuki got its name from a hot oven. It was once pronounced Ka-imu-ki; imu meaning oven. Kaimuki was known as a very hot area.

Kaimuki's main street is named Waialae Avenue, pronounced Wai-ah-lai. Several excellent restaurants and stores are located on this street, as well as Kaimuki District Park and Saint Louis School for boys, Sacred Hearts Academy for Girls, Chaminade University and Kaimuki High School.
