Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (Hindi: कभी ख़ुशी कभी ग़म, Urdu: کبھی خوشی کبھی غم - "Sometimes Happiness, Sometimes Sadness") is a Bollywood film released in India and countries with large NRI populations on December 14, 2001.

It features some of Bollywood's most popular actors: Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee in a guest appearance. It is director Karan Johar's second movie (after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai).

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is the highest grossing Indian film overseas. It climbed up to 3rd place in the British box office within two weeks of release, and maintained its place for over 3 weeks. The film was also thought to have broken the American Box Office Top 10, but this remains uncertain due to a lack of confirmed figures from the distributors. The film was the first Bollywood feature to see a theatrical release in Germany (with German subtitles, a dubbed version was produced, too). It was the highest grossing Indian film ever until 2002's release Devdas, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) is the adopted son of Yashvardhan "Yash" Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) and his wife Nandini (Jaya Bachchan). Both of them love Rahul as if he were their biological son. However, family ties fray when Rahul falls in love with Anjali (Kajol) and refuses an arranged marriage. Anjali's father dies, and Rahul decides to marry her. Because of this, Rahul is disinherited. Rahul and Anjali move to the UK to make a life for themselves. They take Anjali's little sister, Pooja, and Rahul's nanny with them.

Rahul's much younger foster brother Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) is devastated by the split in the family as he has always been unaware of why his brother left. The film resumes many years later when Rohan has grown up. Rohan's grandmothers tell him of why the family split. Once Rohan has graduated from college, he moves to London and manages to make his way into Rahul's family under an assumed name. He managed to reconcile the divided family. He also wins Pooja's love and turns the sassy mini-skirted Pooja into a dutiful sari-clad Indian maiden. All ends happily.

The second half of the film is set principally in London, and many scenes were filmed there.

Filming locations included: Egypt, Bicester Village Shopping Centre (on DVD's deleted scenes), Blenheim Palace (King's College in the film), Bluewater Shopping Centre (the mall), Bond St., Kingsway Rd., Covent Garden, British Museum, Butler's Wharf, Heathrow Airport, Leicester Square, Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Piccadilly Circus, Stowe School, The Strand and Waddesdon Manor.

The music of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was given by Jatin Lalit, Sandesh Shandilya and Aadesh Shrivastava as a special guest music director. Lyrics were provided by Sameer and Anil Pandey. There are total 11 tracks in the album. Singers such as Lata Mangeshkar, Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Amit Kumar, Sudesh Bhonsle, Sunidhi Chauhan and Usha Uthap were selected for singing.

  • Although the film was the musical blockbuster of the year it didn't win any award for Best Music Director although it won for best background score in IIFA Awards.
  • Sonu Nigam won 2 awards for the songs Suraj Hua Madham and 1 for You Are My Soniya.

  • This movie is often called K3G
  • Abhishek Bachchan had a cameo in this movie, which was cut out. It can be seen see on the DVD special features among the deleted scenes.
  • The film is the second movie where Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee appear together. The others are Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) where both cousins can be seen in cameos during the song Maahi Ve and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) where Kajol is seen in the song Rock n Roll Soniye.
  • Though Shahrukh Khan and Kajol play different characters in this film than they did in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, they have the same names as in the previous film: "Rahul" and "Anjali Sharma."
  • Kajol fell on her face by slipping on a rock while shooting the song Suraj Hua Madahm(where she runs away from Shahrukh Khan in a red dress). The shot was later re-done.
  • The "e" added to Kabhi was mainly because the director, Karan Johar believes in numerology.
  • The young Rahul in the beginning of the movie is played by Shahrukh Khan's son, Aryan Khan.
  • In 2005 the movie was released on DVD in Poland as Czasem slonce, czasem deszcz (Sometimes sun, sometimes rain).
  • The movie held the record for highest opening week gross in India for 124 weeks. It was finally overtaken by Main Hoon Na (2004).
  • This movie was heavily pirated, likely cutting down on royalties and profits. This led to Yash Raj films issuing a warning against pirating before releasing Mujhse Dosti Karoge!.
  • Hrithik Roshan was intimidated by acting in front of Bollywood great stars, Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. Bachchan had to calm Roshan down before Roshan could act in the final scene.
  • In a scene [Hrithik Roshan gives a lift to Shahrukh Khan] where Shahrukh Khan says "I don't like jokes" and Kajol says "I don't like you" the same dialogues were said in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai but in that they exchange the dialogues. Kajol says "I don't like jokes" and Shahrukh Khan says "I don't like you"
