K. Chandrashekar Raoతెలుగు : కల్వకుంట్ల చంద్రశేఖర రావ్ (born 17 February 1954) is a member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India. He represents the Karimnagar constituency of Andhra Pradesh and is a member of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi. He was the cabinet minister for Labour and Employment.
He was a member of the Telugu Desam Party until he quit the party and formed the Telangana Rashtra Samithi for the cause of Telangana as a separate state. He is the president of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi. TRS fought the 2004 general elections in alliance with Congress. It was able to win 5 MP seats. TRS was part of the UPA coalition government led by Congress until it had withdrawn its support sighting the reason that UPA was not a mood to give nod for separate Telangana state.
Starting his political career with the Youth Congress in the late 1970s, KCR was elected to the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society at Raghavapuram. He joined the Telugu Desam Party in the early 1980s and unsuccessfully contested from Siddipet Assembly constituency in 1983. Subsequently, he was elected to the Assembly four times in 1985, 1989, 1994 and 1999.
He served as a minister in Chandrababu Naidu's Cabinet during 1996-99. KCR had a stint as deputy speaker of AP Legislative Assembly between 1999-2001.
Quitting the Telugu Desam, as well as his deputy speaker's post and Assembly membership, he founded the TRS on April 27, 2001, to spearhead the movement for a separate Telangana state.
KCR was subsequently re-elected from Siddipet constituency in the Assembly bypoll caused by his resignation.
TRS forged an alliance with Congress in 2004 Assembly/Lok Sabha elections. In all, five TRS members were elected to the Lok Sabha and 26 members to the state Assembly.
KCR and senior leader A Narendra joined the Manmohan Singh Cabinet. Six TRS members were inducted into the Congress ministry headed by Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy in the state. However, the TRS pulled out its ministers from the state Cabinet in July last year. Both KCR and Narendra quit the Manmohan Singh cabinet in August this year.
In the Panchayat Raj elections held this year, TRS entered into poll alliance with the Congress but its performance remained dismal because the people were angry with Congress over its non commitment to form a separate Telangana.
KCR sensing the anger of the people resigned from the cabinet and Lok Sabha. He also withdrew support to the UPA and contested from Karimnagar Constituency in the byelections all alone. He won with a thundering majority of 201584 Votes.
KCR was the Brains behind many things which CBN claimed as his. Here are the few:
1) Putting Drinking water as first priority than Irrigation water. KCR was MLA from siddipet which has biggest drop in ground water and drinking water in summer was a big problem. KCR got funds from NABARD and laid pipeline from Karimnagar to siddipet which is 60 KM from Karimnagar. This is first of its kind in the Nation, not just the state. Till then nobody thought drinking water can be given through pipe lines by getting water from long distance. This catched the attention of the nation and the state which resulted many similar projects and giving drinking water to people in small and medium towns has become one of the main priorities of the state.
2) Janmabhoomi is the concept designed and implemented by KCR in the background. The first program attended by CBN in janmabhoomi on the first day of janmabhoomi is the donation of KCR's huge ancestral home to school of the village which was done by CBN's hands.
3) The fact that KCR used to get the best trainer award in every TDP training sessions at Gandipet used to be eye sore for many other andhra minsiters.
4) "Siddpeta ki Haritha haaramu" is the program implemented by KCR before CBN was even CM. KCR got central govts award for this named "vruksha mitra". The same is implemented by CBN as Clean and Green.
5) KCR also was instrumental behind in the issue of 61o GO during NTR's time
6) KCR was also instrumental in giving priority to small and medium etthhipothala pathakaalu in Telangana during NTR's time.
7) KCR used to be close to CBN even during the CBN's time. His independent attitidue is not liked by NTR. KCR was one of the 3 key people behind the ouster of NTR by CBN. 8)
