[edit] The Hills Have Eyes (1977 film)

In the original, they were a cannibalistic family consisting of:

  • Jupiter
  • Mars
  • Pluto
  • Ruby
  • Mama
  • Mercury
  • Reaper

[edit] Fate

Most of the family except for Mama and Ruby were killed. The sequel left out Mama and had Pluto returning and partnering up with their uncle, known as The Reaper.

Mindripper (also known as The Hills Have Eyes III) is not a direct sequel to the other films and as such Thor is not considered a member of the family.

Pluto
Pluto
  • Pluto is an enormous mutant, towering over the other characters in the film. He has great strength, capable of lifting and throwing a fully grown adult with one arm. To counter his brute strength, Pluto is mentally retarded, and holds the intelligence of a mere child. Pluto's head is misshapen and deformed, and most of his teeth are missing. Pluto is simply misguided by his family, taught and trained to kill, which he has learned to find great enjoyment from. He wears an old suit that's a bit too small for him, and throughout the film he wields a pickaxe and an axe.

Pluto does a great deal of damage throughout the film, killing all of the researchers in the film's opening, and severing Doug's fingers. Pluto meets his demise at Doug's hands. Distracted by a laughing Big Brain, Doug plunges a screwdriver through Pluto's foot. Doug then rushes to Bob Carter's charred corpse, pulling the American flag out of his forehead. Doug then stabs Pluto through the throat with the tiny flagpole. On his knees and choking on his own blood, Pluto is finally finished off when he is hit in the head with his own axe. Pluto is played by actor Michael Bailey Smith.

Lizard
Lizard
  • Lizard is the most bloodthirsty, and merciless of the mutants. He is a smaller mutant, lean and often close to the ground. His major deformity is a cleft lip that shows all of his crooked teeth and his deformed jaw. He set the spike strip in the road that stranded the Carter family. He also wields these tire spikes as a weapon, using it as a whip of sorts. He can also use firearms, as he steals and uses Bob Carter's revolver.

Lizard is the mutant who commits the most torture. When he enters the Carter's motorhome, he eats some of their food, and bites the head off of one of their pet birds, drinking the blood. He then proceeds to rape Brenda, suckle Lynne's breast, and shoot both Lynne and her mother, Ethel. At the end of the film, Doug beats Lizard with the butt of a shotgun before shooting him multiple times. Lizard is finally finished off when Ruby sacrifices herself by pushing them both off of a cliff. Lizard is played by actor Robert Joy.

Ruby
Ruby
  • Ruby is one of the younger mutants of the mining family. She does not have any hatred towards humans, but is actually curious of them, as she studies an unconscious Bobby and later saves Baby Catherine. Ruby has a deformed head, and many of her fingers are merged together, which is most probably due to syndactyly. She is recognized by her red hoodie, which she stole from the Carter family's car.

Ruby is the most humane of the group, and she does not want anyone to be killed. She tries to save Doug's baby from being killed by kidnapping her and running up into the hills. Lizard and Doug follow her, and Ruby sacrifices herself by hurling herself at Lizard, knocking them both off the cliff. Neither of them survive the fall. Ruby is played by actress Laura Ortiz

Goggle
Goggle
  • Goggle is the lookout for the clan of mutants. He sits and hides among the hills, spying on the Carter family with a pair of binoculars, hence his nickname. Goggle's deformities give him an almost reptilian appearance, with two tiny slits for nostrils. He has long hair, and he wears a long coat and a bowler hat.

Goggle, while spying on the Carter family, attracts the attention of their dogs, Beauty and Beast. Beauty is accidentally let out, and runs to the hills, only to be killed and partially eaten by Goggle. Goggle later becomes the first mutant casualty when Beast avenges Beauty's death and tears out his throat. Beast brings Goggle's severed arm back to the Carters' motor home, giving Doug a walkie-talkie that allows him to hear the mutants' plans. Goggle is played by Ezra Buzzington.

Papa Jupiter
Papa Jupiter
  • Papa Jupiter is one of the cannibalistic mutants who terrorizes the Carter family. He has a long hair with a long beard, and wears a dark colored trench coat. In the film, he has no obvious defects or deformities. However, special features on the DVD reveal that Jupiter actually hides a parasitic twin beneath his coat, on his chest. He wields a small pick axe.

Papa Jupiter is first seen hiding in the back of Bob Carter's car, which he slipped into while Bob explored the Gas Haven. He frightened Bob by whispering "Daddy", and knocked Bob unconscious by smashing his head into the car windows. Papa Jupiter later appears in the hills by the motor home, stealing Ethel's corpse. Bobby finds him with Ethel, cracking open her ribs and eating her heart. Bobby and Brenda set a trap by filling the motor home with propane and rigging the sliding door with matches. Papa Jupiter falls for the trap, and is consumed by the flames of the exploding motor home. Bobby finds him still alive, severely burned and impaled on shrapnel. Brenda finishes him off by stabbing him in the forehead with his own pick axe. Papa Jupiter is played by Billy Drago.

Big Mama
Big Mama
  • Big Mama is one of the minor mutants of the clan, residing one of the homes in the nuclear test site. She is an obese woman, and the only deformity she is shown having is a completely bald head. She wears a wig, which she is seen combing in the movie, while watching Divorce Court. Big Mama does little more than knock out Doug when he tries to escape with Baby Catherine. She is never seen again, and her fate is not revealed. She is played by Ivana Turchetto.
Big Brain
Big Brain
  • Big Brain is a mutant who is bound to a wheelchair, crippled by his deformities. He appears to have hydrocephalus, with a large, distended skull. His neck is bloated, possibly by goitres. Big Brain is a hateful individual, and he reveals the truth behind the mutants, revealing that they were once a family of miners who were driven away. They were moved to a nuclear test site, where they were deformed by radiation. Big Brain encourages ruthlessness against all humans, and he communicates with the other mutants from his home, via walkie-talkie. Big Brain commands Lizard to kill Baby Catherine, only to be mauled by Beast shortly after. He is played by actor Desmond Askew
Cyst
Cyst
  • Cyst is another minor mutant found in the nuclear test site. He has a red face and hands, covered in lesions, possibly due to neurofibromatosis. He wears a neck brace, which attaches to a brace that circles his head. He totes a shotgun, and is first seen dragging a female corpse by her feet. Cyst does not have any lines, not does he have any onscreen kills. After Doug kills Pluto, he attacks Cyst, chopping at his knee with an axe, then axing him in the back. Cyst falls to the ground after having the axe ripped from his back, and he is then impaled through the eye with the pick end of the axe. Cyst was played by makeup artist Gregory Nicotero.
The Mutated Children
The Mutated Children
  • Mutated Children are seen living the the nuclear test site. Their names are never revealed, but have been speculated to be Mercury and Venus. Doug stumbled upon them as they are playing with Lincoln Logs in their room. The girl's face is heavily deformed, with a large tumor on her cheek. The boy's deformity is unknown, but his skin has a gray color, and he may or may not have eyes. They are minor characters, with the girl only saying "Mister, will you play with us?" They are played by Judith Jane Vallette and Adam Perrell.
