- History
In 1962, Robert and Barbara Henley put on a children's show in their backyard as a neighborhood activity. After a second popular production in 1963, Henley met with William and Patricia Dixon to begin a collaboration on the next show. The two men incorporated "Junior University" in 1964.
The organization produced two shows at Hunt's Nursery, but growing attendance forced a move to the larger facilities at Roosevelt Bowl in 1965. Dixon's son, Michael, directed the first five shows. He was succeeded by Deane Finwall, who went on to helm JU productions for more than 20 years.
Over a period of 30 years, Bill Dixon wrote 25 original musicals for JU and reworked several of them for revivals -- nearly 500 songs, in all.
"There is no one person in this valley who changed more young lives positively than William R. Dixon", reflected Bob Henley in 1994. "He understood good stories...ideas that piqued the interest of kids. If you can get the interest of children, you can work with them. Teach them. Communicate with them."
LifeHouse Theatre founder, Wayne Scott: "Bill Dixon always found, encouraged, and developed the very best in people...The art of Billy Dixon works. It offers hope. It reaches people. It touches people. It moves people. It changes people...Billy Dixon and his art will continue to touch lives and make a difference in our world for years to come."
