Jumpstyle is a musicgenre, created in Belgium in the late 90's.

De godfathers of the jump-genre ware da boy tommy and Da Rick, which created the hit "Ready to rumble", with a sample of Michael Buffer. They introduced Jump to the people in Belgium. In the early days, Jump was only poplular in the Netherlands and Belgium, but later it also became a succes in France and Germany. Because of the rise of Hardstyle, Jump was called Jumpstyle in the Netherlands.

Since summer 2006, Jump became popular again. Through the years, the speed of the beat in the jumpgenre has increased from 135-140 bpm to 140-145 bpm.

Originally the Gabber dance style called "hakken" was used to dance to the slower jumpstyle music. But later a new dance evolved called "Skiën" (to ski).

Skiën means kicking your feet forward and backward on the bass-line, while your torso goes the opposite way (right foot forward, torso back), once in a while lifting (one of) your feet significantly higher than usual to indicate a break in the beat.

The dance is also called skank but is different from the Skank associated with Ska/ska punk/reggae/dub genres.

Often another variation of this dance called "Duo-Jump" is performed by two people who choreograph their movements and perform them in unison along side one another.
