Julius Theodor Christian Ratzeburg was a German zoologist, botanist, entomologist and a forester born 16 February 1801 at Berlin . He died 24 October 1871in the same town.

He was the son of a professor at the veterinary school. He studied medicine and natural sciences at Berlin and was principally interested in botany. He became a private lecturer at the university in 1828 . At this time Ratzeburg was in contact with Alexander (1769-1859) and Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767-1835). He next became professor of Natural History at the forest school of Eberswalde at the invitation of Friedrich Wilhelm Leopold Pfeil (1783-1859). He founded the botanic garden of forestry at Eberswalde working there until his retirement in 1869. He returned to Berlin where he died aged 70 years. Ratzeburg was the author of important works on forestry and forest entomology and he is considered the founder of this discipline. He was notably interested in parasitic species. In 1827 to 824 he wrote with Johann Friedrich von Brandt (1802-1879) Medizinische Zoologie (ou Zoologie médicale) which was a stadard work for many years.
