Julius Dobos

Gyula Julius Dobos (born June 27, 1976 in Hungary) is an internationally noted composer and music producer, best known for his music for movies, TV shows in Europe and in the U.S., and for his orchestral / electronic album worldwide release, Mountain Flying. Dobos is one of the few Hungarian composers who managed to keep the legacy of their musical background and to use traditional Central-European musical approaches and concepts while working in the commercial music world.

Dobos started playing the piano at age 5, writing music at 9. After his composition, filmscore composition and music business studies at various high-reputation institutions in Europe, including the Weiner Leo Music School in Budapest and the Stuttgart College of Music in Germany, he produced music for radio and TV commercials, mostly in Hungary. Since then, under the wings of his production company, JDSProductions International, the composer has written original music scores for several feature movies, over 140 television- and short films, movie trailers, radioplays, commercials, and has produced major corporate music projects and solo artists as well. JDSP's music licensing side, MoodsForSale is one of the most sought-after non-library original music licensing source in the film and commercial production industry today.

Julius Dobos wrote his first major filmscore for the action-adventure movie Europe Express at the age of 22 and was named The Youngest feature film music composer in Central and Eastern Europe ever. Although the movie was a moderate success, the score was praised by both movie critics and audiences. Pest Est (leading movie programming magazine of Hungary) called the score "exceptional and atom-professional" and Filmvilag, Hungary's conservative movie critique magazine wrote "Dobos' score would easily work in Hollywood superproductions". Other significant applied musical works by Julius Dobos include original scores for the movies Thend, Black Strawberries, the award-winning animated shorts Red PLanet Blues - series and music for TV shows like The Reality of Speed and Your House & Home.

Dobos' first full-length album co-produced with Nokia, Connecting Images was a uniqe collaboration. While the tracks musically describe each model of Nokia's 1998 cell phone line, it is not a promotional compromise album but a carefully-thought out, worthy concept work. Dobos worked with Grammy Award® winner Martha Sebestyen and Europe-wide famous Monteverdi Choir on the orchestral-electronic album. The release went platinum in Europe. Dobos' other major album, the orchestral / electronic masterpiece titled Mountain Flying (featuring the NHS Orchestra and again, Martha Sebestyen and the Monteverdi Choir) raised international attention and achieved acclaim on five continents. Other albums by Julius Dobos include Common Way, Applied Moods (compilation), Moods for Sale, Techno Chemistry, ElectroScapes and EPIC.

Most critics emphasize the musical style, instrumentation and unique sounds that can be heard in Dobos' music. This is partially due to the composer's unique musical background but also to his sound design skills and interest in creating unconventional sonic textures . Especially in his electronic music, unique sounds and instruments are common. Dobos' music is usually very melodic, often featuring a simple, catchy theme that serves as the basis of the piece, while the complex, often monumental instrumentation creates the characteristic sound and usually uplifting, positive tone of his works. Reviews often compare Dobos' musical style to that of composer like Ennio Morricone, Vangelis, John Williams, Jean-Michel Jarre and Mike Oldfield.
