Julie Cypher, born August 24, 1964 in Wichita, Kansas, is best known as the former partner and lover of Melissa Etheridge.

Formerly married to Lou Diamond Phillips, Cypher attended the University of Texas at Austin and met Etheridge while directing the music video for the song Bring Me Some Water in 1988. During her partnership with Melissa Etheridge, she gave birth to two children, Bailey Jean, born February 1997, and Beckett, born November 1998, fathered by sperm donor David Crosby.

Famous for being one half of what is likely the first publicly lesbian celebrity couple, Cypher is an active advocate for gay rights and has done promotions for PETA. She and Etheridge broke up as she cited an interest in men. She married Matthew Hale in 2004.
